Cause of Dengue:
Dengue fever is cause by Dengue fever virus (RNA type of virus from genus Flavivirus). This virus is carried by female Aedes mosquito. Aedes mosquito breeds in tropical regions in and around human population.
The mosquitoes carry the virus from an infected person to a healthy person within a period of one week and the incubation period is 4-10 days.
Stereotypically, it has types- DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, DEN-4. After being infected by one serotype of dengue fever, the person develops long term immunity towards that type and short-term immunity towards others.
If not treated effectively, dengue fever develops into Severe Dengue that shows symptoms of hemorrhage, shock to the system to plasma impairment etc.
The infected person will show common flu-type symptoms of dengue in 4-10 days of the bite. Below are the symptoms of Dengue:
- High Fever
- Abdominal pain
- Vomiting, nausea
- Joint pains
- Pain behind the eyes
The symptoms will usually last for 2-7 days.
Symptoms of Severe dengue include:
- Decrease in temperature
- Severe abdominal pain
- Vomiting blood
- Bleeding gums
- Rapid breathing
Patient with symptoms of severe dengue should be immediately treated by healthcare professionals.
In the case of Dengue precaution is even more important because the specific treatment is not available. Below are the things one need to take to prevent from dangerous dengue.
- Maintaining a clean and hygienic environment is necessary as the Aedes mosquitoes thrive around human population and breed in water-filled areas around- water filled containers, non-used bottles etc.
- Adult mosquitoes will hide in dark places- spaces under beds, closets and corners of the rooms as they are protected from external environment, hence increasing the life span.
Hence it is necessary to aerate these spaces on regular basis.
- Beds can be covered with mosquito nets. Using mosquito repellant gels, machines also help.
- Spreading awareness about the disease amongst the community is the key. Rxpress is doing its bit. Please join us.
There is no particular vaccine available against the dengue fever. Since, the virus can also breed in human blood & can be transmitted across the globe via travelers.
Dengue vaccine has been developed for counties like Brazil, Mexico etc. The flu symptoms are treated with paracetamol and other anti-pyretics. The patient requires adequate bed rest and fluids in the system. Also drinking juice of papaya leaves helps in boosting the platelets count in the blood system.
